The only knowledge that will be assumed is that participants are familiar with elementary algebra as well as elementary statistical concepts such as measures of central tendency (e.g. the mean, the median etc.) and measures of dispersion (e.g. variance). No programming skills are required either. Throughout the course we will assume only basic familiarity with computers.

The school is based on fresh ideas about what is needed for empirical research in the 21st century. It encompasses the two main revolutions that took place in this field, namely causal inference and big-data approaches. The morning session is dedicated to causal inference while the afternoon sessions focus on providing the skills to enable you to convert text and other resources into data. Combined the two sessions offer a very powerful toolbox for cutting-edge social science research. Finally, the courses assure informed by substantive research that the instructors find very interesting and attractive. This means that the building block through which the statistical material will be taught is going to consist of substantive examples across various fields in political science, economics and sociology.

The summer school is addressed to undergraduate, graduate level students and young professionals in the social sciences who are interested in doing quantitative research. The methods we will learn can be applied to multiple topics and research questions, coming from political science, economics, sociology, or even history.

Anyone interested in answering social science questions using data, broadly defined (geographical, survey, historical or other), is welcome to apply.

Additionally, the summer school will provide you with an overview and understanding of cutting-edge research in quantitative social science research, and thus can be a great preparation for students interested in pursuing a master’s or doctorate degree in top universities in Europe or the US.
